The eldest of eight children to Irish Catholic dairy farmers, James grew up in Duxbury, VT where his mother was also a music teacher and choir director. Having worked hard on the farm and graduating from high school two years early, James entered into the maelstrom of 1970's jazz.
As a trombonist, he has worked with some of the masters: Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Jaki Byard, Karl Berger, Peter Apfelbaum, and many more.
James lives in Burlington, VT playing drums & piano as well as writing. He's recently finished his first book.
